Surprisingly, except for one floor of the 5-story office building, which was occupied due to construction, the staff on the other floors continued to work normally during the translation process and were not affected. How can we ensure that such a heavyweight building needs to be moved an average of 8 meters per day at a stable speed without shaking, and that office building personnel can work normally?

Moving Forward for Jinan's "Great East Ring"

"Pan moving" is the best choice

The building being moved this time is the office building of Jinan Hongwang Concrete Co., Ltd. According to Shandong Jiangu Special Engineering Co., Ltd., which is responsible for the construction and on-site operation of the translation project, the office building is a 5-story reinforced concrete frame structure with an area of 5386 square meters. The building has an east-west length of 59.4 meters and a north-south width of 18.2 meters. The height of each floor is 3.9 meters, and the weight of the building reaches over 8000 tons.


It is understood that the building was built in 2015 with a designed service life of 50 years. Why did it need to be demolished in 2019? The Shandong Jianda Engineering Appraisal and Reinforcement Research Institute, responsible for project design and planning, introduced that due to the fact that the eastern section of the second ring road of the Jinan Ring Expressway, also known as the "Great East Ring" of Jinan, passes through this area, this office building needs to be moved eastward by nearly 25 meters to make way for the expressway. This project is also the first floor movement project caused by the construction of a expressway in Shandong Province.


The reason for adopting a "translational move" instead of a post demolition reconstruction approach is the best choice considering multiple factors. Xia Fengmin, Director of the Design Department of Shandong Jianda Engineering Appraisal and Reinforcement Research Institute, introduced that the cost of translation is saved by 70% compared to reconstruction after demolition. "Excluding other costs such as post greening and restoration, the cost of simple relocation is around 8 million yuan, while the overall cost of demolition and reconstruction will exceed 20 million yuan. At the same time, demolition and reconstruction will also generate a large amount of construction waste, causing environmental pollution."

To move a huge object within 76 hours, the workload behind it goes far beyond a few dozen hours. According to Shandong Jiangu Special Engineering Co., Ltd., the relocation process started from 7:00 on December 27th last year and ended at 10:00 on December 30th. The related preparation work began on October 18th, and the entire construction period lasted for 74 days.


The relevant person in charge of Shandong Jianda Engineering Appraisal and Reinforcement Research Institute introduced that the entire translation workload includes indoor and outdoor earthwork excavation in the early stage, production of indoor upper and lower tracks, pouring of indoor upper joists and inclined beams, and production of outdoor lower tracks and brackets; Translation construction, health inspection during the translation process; The foundation connection treatment, restoration construction of internal and external pipelines, toilets and other supporting facilities after the building is in place in the later stage. "The translation of the office building involves first placing it on a bracket and using rollers as wheels on the translation track. After all foundations are laid, the building is cut off from the foundation. At this point, all the weight of the office building is borne by the wheels, making it like a movable vehicle body, and the top of the crane provides the power for the building's horizontal movement."


Xia Fengmin told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter that there are many difficulties in the overall design and construction of the project. The main difficulties in the early stage are the narrow scope of work for bracket construction and the high requirement for the flatness of the translation track, which cannot exceed two millimeters. During construction, due to the inability to spread out the construction area of the office building, the construction party can only work in the narrow space of the basement indoor, and must abandon high-efficiency large equipment, use handheld small machinery, and carry out small batch and gradual construction. In the later translation, it is necessary to ensure that the building moves steadily and the overall structure does not scatter.

During the entire translation process, what surprised people working in the office building the most was that everyone could still work normally in the office building during the entire translation project.


Mr. Shen, the person in charge of Jinan Hongwang Concrete Co., Ltd., introduced that due to the very slow speed of building translation, except for feeling the different positions of the doors when entering and exiting every day, working in it does not feel the building moving. "However, during construction, the original entrance and exit cannot be accessed, and the construction party will provide us with temporary walkways."


Xia Fengmin told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter that the reason why the office is not affected is partly because the speed of the office building during the translation process is very slow, with an average distance of about 0.53 centimeters per minute. "The movement speed is like a snail, so it will not have a significant impact on the normal work of office workers."


On the other hand, throughout the entire project, the construction team adopted a PLC full process control system to ensure the stability of the translation process. Xia Fengmin introduced that PLC full process control system, also known as programmable logic controller, is an electronic system for digital operation, which controls various types of mechanical operations through digital or analog inputs or outputs. "Its main function is to connect industrial computers with jacks, thereby automatically controlling the thrust and displacement of the jacks to ensure their normal use and stable and stable movement speed without shaking."
